Good afternoon,
Some things that have been getting on my nerves lately and I feel that I should rant about them.
First, why am I buying devices that have been on the market for years that still don’t have updated firmware? I just purchased a 2021 USB smarthome device that couldn’t even connect to my home assistant without being flashed. Firmware updates are absolutely crucial to keeping your network safe. Heck, there was a DEFCON talk like 2 years ago that they discovered a way to get root access to cameras and run it as a linux box because of firmware issues.
My ender 5 had firmware issues that specifically were noted with Octoprint. The firmware it was loaded with had issues with reporting temperature. I had to either update the firmware and enable features that I personally wanted or I had to hope octoprint was taking care of the issue. While this doesn’t seem like a huge issue to most, I like to have a little more control over my devices.
Why the fuck are we pushing Web3 bullshit? NFT’s are 100% a scam. It’s no different than investing in shit stocks. It’s gambling to the core. I don’t ever want to see Web3 being the “Main” thing. Decentralize the internet? Sure, lets get more services than AWS or Azure. Absolutely. But token based exchanging? I don’t think that is the direction we want to go. Given the major fluctuation of a non-regulated currency (Bitcoin) I don’t want to buy a teeshirt for 4 dollars equivalent one day and 150 the next.
To surmise, Web3 bad, firmwares need to be updated prior to shipping, and for the love of god can someone double check that it’s good to ship before it burns down a house. Looking at you Anet A8.
Let’s talk about the good!
I don’t want to leave this post without talking about the good stuff, a bright spot if you would.
Alex Jones getting his ass handed to him in the damages hearing? Fantastic. That scumbag had it coming for years and I’m glad to hear that it’s finally come to the point where he knows how bad he messed up.
Home automation is a challenge but worthwhile. I’ve slowly been updating my home with some smart devices. Things like a plug here or a light there. After the initial fight to get the devices online it’s been smooth.
I recently found out that frying day old pizza in a pan with butter is absolutely amazing. How did I go my entire life without frying leftover pizza? Holy crap! My wife wanted to just pop it into the microwave, give it a quick nuke. Like a breaded deep-fried mozzarella stick with all the good fix’ins. Just make sure you don’t burn the butter and I think you’ll fall in love too.
I think that’s all I’m going to write today. Have a great rest of your week!
